'Don't Look Now and Other Stories' by Daphne du Maurier
This Binding won a Highly Commended Certificate in the 2008, Society of Designer Bookbinders Competition. It is currently on exhibition along with other bindings at theRylands Library Manchester until January 17th 2009. Details are available here.
This has been sewn on 5 leather lined with linen tapes with front and back inside red suede leather fly leaves and paste downs. This book is innovative in that it departs from tradtional styles of binding in being a soft, tactile, turnable binding with suede outer and inner covers which have been lined with black card. In addition black card strips were cut and pasted onto the underside of the covers to give it added turnability. The book was then decorated with coloured leather onlays, the foredge was painted and black lines, silver circles and dots were used to create a unified pattern and help the onlays to become more subtle and in the background. A box was made to house the book in red buckram with a button and ribbons..
